Winter Weather Resources
As the rainy season kicks in, it's time for a quick home safety check! Ensure your emergency backup generators, sump pumps, and retention systems are in top-notch condition to keep your family safe in emergencies. In case of heavy rainfall:
Avoid moving water in storm-damaged or flood-prone areas.
Stay clear of floodwaters as they could be electrically charged.
Report downed power lines to PG&E through their Report It! Tool.
If you must drive during a storm, be cautious and look out for downed trees or flooding. If your home faces minor flooding, use sandbags strategically to limit the damage. Throughout the rainy season, find sand and sandbags at the self-service station in Holbrook Palmer Park pictured below.

Holiday Schedule for Town Center Services
We hope everyone has a festive holiday season! Town Center services including Building and Planning counter, post office, and library will be closed as follows:
The Atherton Library will be closed on December 24, December 25, December 31, and January 1.
City Hall, including Planning & Building counter and post office, will be closed from December 25 - January 1. Building inspections are limited to critical path inspections that will be scheduled for December 27. Regular Town services will resume on January 2, 2024.
Our emergency services from Police and Menlo Fire will not be impacted by this closure. Please do call non-emergency line at (650) 688-6500 or 9-1-1 depending on your need.
Look Back at ADAPT's 2023 Impact
The Town thanks the dedicated volunteers of ADAPT whose rich involvement has made Atherton a more disaster resilient community.
Looking back on 2023, here are some of ADAPT's accomplishments that they shared with us.
Activated by the Police Department twice, for storm drain cleaning and traffic control during President Biden's recent visit.
Held monthly community meetings covering a wide range of disaster preparedness topics every month (except our summer break in August).
Hosted six neighborhood get togethers featuring Chief McCulley that covered all 14 of Atherton's Areas and involved over 200 residents.
Participated in numerous special events: National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, the Summer concerts, Earth Day, Peninsula Preparedness Day, and the Centennial Celebration.
Held two communication drills to confirm the viability of ham radio communication between all points in Atherton and the Town Hall.
Added three new board members, including Susan Warren, Christine David, and Matt McWright.
Participated in multiple meetings to foster greater coordination with our neighboring disaster response organizations, including MPFD CERT and MPC Ready.
Purchased a fourth Disaster Response Cache trailer and are in process for creating smaller disaster caches for all of our 22 Emergency Assembly Points.
Looking forward to 2024, ADAPT will continue to think about what needs related to disaster preparedness exist among Atherton residents and how ADAPT can do a better job meeting these. Since you are their focus, please do not hesitate to contact ADAPT (info@getreadyatherton.org) with any thoughts or ideas.
Did you know?
Each year, the County takes on a homeless count to help inform its services. Join the County of San Mateo Human Services Agency (HSA) in their 2024 One Day Homeless Count. On January 25, 2024, from dawn until mid-morning, HSA and their trusty partners will be hitting the streets to take a headcount of the homeless population. This helps with local planning, funding, and improving programs that lead to permanent housing solutions. As a volunteer, you'll be assigned a census tract and tasked to scour every street, jotting down your observations on a handy mobile app. Learn more about this countywide effort by clicking here.
