Happy New Year text with gold lettering

Happy New Year, Atherton!

As our Centennial Year comes to a close, Town staff would like to wish each of our community members a wonderful welcome to the new year! We look forward to seeing everyone in 2024!

Renting Your ADU with Help from HIP Housing

Have you seen the HIP Housing banner at Marsh and Middlefield? We want to make sure everyone knows that we are collaborating with the HIP Housing to encourage homeowners with Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to rent them to local community members. Stay tuned for events with HIP Housing in the New Year!

Check Out Atherton's Climate Solutions Dashboard

2023 was a momentous year for the Town. In our Centennial year, the Town updated its Climate Action Plan (CAP), with the updated plan taking steps to achieve a 49% emissions reduction by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045. While the Town is taking actions of its own, a critical element in lowering emissions is community action. Residents can help move our community towards carbon neutrality by understanding what steps the CAP is taking and what role individuals can play in contributing to a safer, healthier, and more sustainable Atherton.

The Atherton Climate Action Plan revolves around five key focus areas that will drive the Town, its residents, schools, and non-profits toward a carbon-neutral future. Ready to jump into those focus areas? We've launched a new Climate Solutions Dashboard, which connects residents to the data that drives our climate action decisions, Atherton-specific information on climate change and its impacts, and ways to get involved.

Each section of the Dashboard provides specific actions that residents can take to make everyday elements of your life more sustainable – like home electrification or proper waste disposal and composting.

Check out the online dashboard by visiting: climateaction.ci.atherton.ca.us.

GreenWaste New Year Holiday Collection Schedule

Please note that GreenWaste will not be picking up recycling, organics, and trash on New Year's Day (1/1). All collections scheduled for the week of January 1st will be postponed by one day. Please call GreenWaste at (650) 798-5999 with any questions.

Recycling Your Holiday Tree

Save this information for when it's time to say goodbye to your Christmas or holiday tree:

  • Place your tree curbside, next to your green cart, by 6 a.m. on your collection day. If you have on-property service, you still need to bring your tree to the curb.
  • Cut your tree into 6ft. pieces or smaller. If your tree is larger, you need to trim it down or it won’t be picked up.
  • Remove all stands, lights, ornaments, or tinsel from your tree. These items can damage the recycling equipment or contaminate the compost.
  • Do not cover or bag your tree.
  • Flocked trees (sprayed with artificial snow) are not accepted for recycling. You need to place them in your gray cart as trash.

Thank you for doing your part to reduce waste this season!

Thank You to the Toy Drive Contributors!

We put out the call, and you answered! The Atherton Police Officers Association and Police Activities League gathered toys from Town residents for the annual Adelante Selby Lane Toy Drive. Over 100 families shopped  for toys and bicycles for their children. School Resource Officer Dimitri Andruha works closely with the immersion school and gathers participation for this very popular event. We thank our very generous residents and other donors who make this such a special and successful event for the children!
