Pedestrian Safety

from Chief McCulley

As your Chief of Police, I want to take a moment to talk about pedestrian safety, particularly when walking in the rain or at night. These conditions can significantly increase risks for both pedestrians and drivers, but together, we can reduce those risks.

When walking in the rain or after dark, please remember these safety tips:

  1. Always walk on the left side of the roadway facing oncoming traffic.
  2. Wear bright or reflective clothing. Visibility is key in low-light or rainy conditions. Reflective gear or accessories can make a life-saving difference.
  3. Carry a flashlight or use your phone’s light. This not only helps you see your path but also makes you more visible to drivers.
  4. Avoid walking on the roadway whenever possible.
  5. Stay alert. Avoid distractions like headphones or phones, which can prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic or noticing hazards.
  6. Watch for slippery surfaces. Wet roads, sidewalks, and crosswalks can be dangerous, so walk carefully. For drivers, please remember to slow down, especially in neighborhoods or areas with heavy pedestrian traffic, and always stay vigilant for people crossing the street.

Your safety is our top priority. Let’s work together to make our community a safer place for everyone.
