Community Statement from the Chief of Police
Dear Atherton Residents:
It is with deep sorrow that I address the tragic incident that occurred on the morning of Tuesday, May 7th, involving a fatal collision between a garbage truck and a bicyclist on Middlefield Road at Prior Lane. On behalf of the entire Police Department team and the Town of Atherton, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim. No words can ease the pain of such a devastating loss, but please know that our thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.
Our department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. We are working closely with our regional Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) investigation, and traffic safety experts to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. We are committed to determining exactly what caused this collision.
Our officers will be stepping up enforcement action along this corridor in an effort to bring more attention to bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle safety. We will also be conducting additional community education around bicycle, pedestrian, and driver safety.
I want to assure our community that we take this tragedy seriously. We must all work together — Town departments, private partners, and residents — to help ensure that such a preventable loss does not happen again.
As Chief of Police, I remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the safety of every person in our city. We will continue to share updates as the investigation proceeds. If you have information about the incident or concerns you wish to express, please contact me directly at SMcCulley@ci.atherton.ca.us or by calling our Dispatch Center at 650-655-6800.
Thank you for your continued trust and engagement as we work through this tragedy together.
Sincerely,
Steven D McCulley
