San Mateo County Sheriff Safety Tips

As the Fourth of July approaches, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and local first responders are reminding the community about the dangers of fireworks and the penalties for illegally possessing or using them in San Mateo County.

• Fireworks pose serious fire hazards and can also frighten pets, children and individuals affected by trauma.

• Whether it’s sparklers, firecrackers or Roman candles, all fireworks are illegal in unincorporated areas of San Mateo County and in most cities.

• Community members are reminded of the County’s fireworks ordinance, which was strengthened in 2023 to increase penalties for those caught possessing or using illegal fireworks. Click here to read the ordinance.

• Fireworks are prohibited at all 24 San Mateo County Parks.

• To report illegal fireworks activity, call the Sheriff’s Office at 650-363-4911 or contact your respective local law enforcement agency.
