Safety Element Workshop

Join us to share feedback on the draft plan and help guide the Town's long-term approach to hazard preparedness and resilience.

In-person attendance and participation is encouraged.

If joining virtually, please submit public comments in advance to tford@ci.atherton.ca.us

The Safety Element is a required component of the Town's General Plan that focuses on protecting the community from natural and human-made hazards such as earthquakes, wildfires, flooding, and climate change. It establishes a long-term framework for preparedness, mitigation, and resilience - distinct from the Town's Emergency Response Plan, which guides real-time response actions.

This update plays a crucial role in strengthening Atherton's ability to precent, respond to, and recover from disasters. Community input is essential to ensure the Safety Element reflects local priorities and supports the well-being of all residents.

We encourage you to participate in the upcoming Community Workshop and share your perspective as we work together to enhance Atherton's safety measures. Following the workshop, staff will incorporate community feedback and present the updated draft for review and consideration by the Planning Commission and City Council.

OneShoreline - Flood Warning

The rainy season is upon us, and one important part of OneShoreline's storm preparation work is the Flood Early Warning System network of more than 30 stream, precipitation, and tide gauges across San Mateo County that provides real-time flood alerts as well as important data for our projects.

The Flood Early Warning System website features an interactive map with the locations and status of active gauges, dashboards displaying alert thresholds with creek depth and tide graphs for four flood-prone waterways:

Atherton Channel, Belmont Creek, Colma Creek, and San Bruno Creek, and sends automated alerts to emergency contacts at 75% (flood watch) and 100% (flood warning) of a creek’s downstream capacity.

Stay informed and subscribe to the OneShoreline newsletters here.
