Sustainability

Global scientists agree that the window is rapidly closing to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. The Town of Atherton is committed to doing its part to build a more sustainable future. Our goal is to preserve the environment and safeguard public health while ensuring the economic well-being of our residents.

Good news: Atherton exceeded its 2020 goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 15 percent below 2005 levels (roughly the equivalent to 1990 GHG levels). In fact, we reached 27 percent below 2005 levels!

What’s next? Atherton has committed to reducing GHG emissions to 49 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 (or, 40 percent below 1990 levels) and achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. The Town of Atherton’s Environmental Programs Committee works alongside our City Manager's Office to ensure we are on track through 2030 and beyond.

Most of Atherton’s greenhouse gas emissions are produced by methane (natural) gas-powered appliances in residential homes and gas-powered vehicles. To achieve our goals - and stem the worst effects of climate change - Atherton residents will need to take individual action today.
