[ARCHIVED] Back to School Safety and E-Bike Safety Guidelines

Color Police Star

Subject: Back to School Safety & E-Bike Safety Guidelines

Dear Atherton Residents,

As the new school year begins, it's essential for us all to prioritize safety—both on the road and in our community. Please take a moment to review the following guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone:

Back to School Safety

  1. Drive Carefully: Be extra cautious near school zones. Obey all speed limits and watch for children crossing the streets, especially during drop-off and pick-up times.

  1. Pedestrian Awareness: Parents, please remind your children to use crosswalks and to look both ways before crossing the street. Walk with them if necessary to ensure they follow safe practices.

  1. School Bus Safety: Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children. Remember, passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous.

E-Bike Safety

  1. Wear a Helmet: Helmets are essential for protecting yourself while riding an e-bike. Make sure it fits properly and meets safety standards.

  1. Follow Traffic Rules: E-bikes should be operated like any other vehicle on the road. Obey traffic signals, stop signs, and lane markings.  Refer to the attached E-Bike safety guidance and laws.

  1. Be Visible: Use lights and wear reflective gear to ensure you're visible to others, especially during early morning or evening rides.

  1. Speed Control: Maintain a safe speed, particularly in residential areas or where children are present. Always be prepared to stop quickly if necessary.

Let's work together to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all, especially as our children head back to school. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to safety.

Best regards,

Steven D McCulley
