Subject: Important Alert: Email Scam Targeting Residents
Dear Atherton Residents,
We want to bring to your immediate attention a concerning scam that has recently been reported by several members of our community. The Atherton Police Department has been made aware of a fraudulent email circulating in our town that threatens the privacy and security of its recipients.
Here’s what we know so far:
- Scam Details: Residents have reported receiving emails claiming that malware has been downloaded onto their laptops, allowing the sender to access personal files and information. The email goes on to demand payment via Bitcoin, threatening to release private data if the payment is not made.
- Photos of Property: Some emails have included photos taken of the front of the recipient's property in an attempt to appear more credible.
Please note the following precautions:
- DO NOT REPLY to these emails under any circumstances.
- DO NOT provide any personal information, make payments, or respond to threats.
- If you receive such an email, delete it immediately.
