[ARCHIVED] Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Starts with Drivers

News Flash Img-May 30

Message from the Chief of Police:

Dear Atherton Residents,

As your Chief of Police, I want to take a moment to address a critical issue that affects the safety and well-being of everyone in our community—bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Each day, our roads are shared by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. While we all have a role to play in ensuring safety, drivers bear a particular responsibility due to the nature of the vehicles they operate. A moment of distraction or impatience behind the wheel can lead to devastating consequences.

I urge all drivers to remain alert, slow down in neighborhoods and school zones, and always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Give cyclists adequate space—at least three feet when passing—and check your mirrors and blind spots, especially when turning or opening your car door. Don’t drive distracted, those calls and texts can and must wait.

Our officers are committed to promoting traffic safety, but we cannot do it alone. With your help, we can prevent accidents, protect lives, and create a safer environment for all road users.

Thank you for your attention to this important message and for doing your part to make our community safer.

Stay safe,

Steven D McCulley

Chief of Police
