Dear Residents,
We have received several concerns from members of our community regarding recent sightings of coyotes in residential neighborhoods. I want to take a moment to provide some information and reassurance about how these situations are managed and what you can do to help protect your family and pets.
Coyotes are native to California and are commonly found throughout both urban and rural areas. While their presence can understandably cause concern, it’s important to note that sightings alone do not typically warrant removal or relocation. State wildlife regulations and best practices from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) advise against the trapping or relocating of healthy, non-aggressive wildlife such as coyotes.
Our police department continues to work closely with animal control and wildlife experts to monitor any reports of aggressive or threatening coyote behavior. If a coyote is acting aggressively or poses a direct threat to public safety, please contact us immediately by calling our non-emergency line at 650-688-6500. We do not respond to sightings of wildlife.
We also encourage residents to take the following preventive steps:
- Do not feed wildlife or leave pet food outdoors.
- Keep small pets indoors, especially at dawn or dusk.
- Secure garbage cans and remove outdoor food sources.
- Use noise and motion-activated deterrents if needed.
We understand and share your concern for safety, and we remain committed to keeping our community informed and protected. For additional resources on living with wildlife, please visit the CDFW website at https://wildlife.ca.gov/
