The Atherton Police Department is providing an update regarding the incident at Menlo-Atherton High School on September 10th, 2025 in response to recent reports containing inaccurate information.
As stated in our initial release, earlier that day the department was notified of a tip received through Menlo-Atherton High School’s tip line regarding a potential threat to the school. The tip involved a former Menlo-Atherton student, currently enrolled at another local high school, who had posted concerning content on social media referencing a possible threat.
Clarification of Facts
- No weapon was recovered.
- The social media post contained an image of ammunition magazines—there were no firearms depicted.
- Out of an abundance of caution, Menlo-Atherton High School and nearby Laurel School were both placed on a “secure campus” order from approximately 12:50 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. while officers ensured the safety of students and staff.
- The subject of the investigation is a juvenile and was safely located on September 10th, 2025.
- At no time has there been an ongoing threat to the public.
The Atherton Police Department continues to work closely with Menlo-Atherton High School, other law enforcement agencies, and the District Attorney’s Office as this investigation proceeds.
