The Atherton Police Department and the California Highway Patrol worked together on 9-4-18 to enforce pedestrian right-of-way violations on El Camino Real and Stockbridge Avenue. This intersection was chosen due to complaints from citizens regarding vehicles failing to stop for pedestrians crossing the street. In total, 12 moving citations, 5 warning citations, and 5 verbal warnings were issued in a 2.5 hour period from 9:00am to 11:30am.
Here are some things to remember:
1) The speed limit on El Camino Real is 35 miles per hour.
2) Vehicles must yield to pedestrians crossing in a marked crosswalk. California Vehicle Code section 21950(a). Minimum fine of $238.
3) Vehicles must not overtake another vehicle stopped for a pedestrian. California Vehicle Code section 21951. Minimum fine of $490.
4) Always be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to the road, other vehicles and constantly scan for pedestrians. Do not use hand-held cell phones for talking, texting, or directional guidance while operating a vehicle.
