Attention Atherton residents! A dead bird collected in Atherton, by the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District, has tested positive for the West Nile virus. Protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes by taking the following precautions:
Dump Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Empty any containers around your home, such as flower pots, bird baths, and gutters
Report Biting Mosquitoes: If you notice mosquitoes biting in your area, contact the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District immediately at (650-344-8592).
Use Insect Repellent: When spending time outdoors, especially in the evening and early morning, use an EPA-registered insect repellent to keep mosquitoes at bay.
Report Dead Birds: Dead birds can be a sign of West Nile virus in the area. Report any dead birds you find to the West Nile virus dead bird hotline at 1-877-968-2473.
