Message from the Chief of Police: Jewelry Theft Scams Warning

Dear Residents,

I want to take a moment to address a concerning trend that has been affecting our community: jewelry theft scams. Criminals are increasingly targeting individuals, especially seniors, using deceptive tactics to steal valuable items. These scams often occur in public places such as parking lots, parks, or even outside your home.

This occurred this morning in Meno Park when an elderly woman was out walking.  She was approached by a man and woman in a car and asked her directions.  The female suspect asked the woman if she could hug her out of appreciation for her help.   When the suspect hugged the woman, she stole her gold and diamond necklace she had worn for 40 years.

Here are some common methods used by scammers:

Fake emergencies or distractions: Scammers may approach you pretending to ask for help or give you something, distracting you while they steal your jewelry.

Fake jewelry swaps: Some thieves offer fake jewelry in exchange for your real gold or silver, claiming it has sentimental value or is of high quality.

Impersonating trustworthy figures: Scammers might pose as utility workers, charity representatives, or even friends of neighbors to gain your trust and access your property.

To protect yourself, please follow these safety tips:

Avoid displaying valuable jewelry when out in public.

Be cautious when approached by strangers, especially those trying to engage you in conversation or offering items.

If you feel unsafe, leave the area immediately and report suspicious activity to the police.

Do not allow strangers into your home without proper identification.

Always verify with neighbors or service providers if someone claims to be affiliated with them.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of these scams or has encountered suspicious behavior, please contact the local police department immediately.

Together, we can work to protect our community from these criminals.

Stay vigilant and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Steven D McCulley

Chief of Police
