Message from the Police Chief to Atherton Residents

Dear Atherton Residents,

The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles serve as a stark reminder of the importance of being prepared for natural disasters. While our community is fortunate not to have experienced such a disaster, we must recognize that the risk of wildfires and other emergencies is very real, even in Atherton.

Our first priority is your safety, and preparation is key. Here are steps we can all take to be ready for a similar disaster.

Stay Informed:

During emergencies and large-scale disasters, clear communication and information is critical to make informed decisions on how best to protect yourself and your families. For this to happen you must sign up for emergency alerts from local first responder agencies. This is critical as emergency dispatch centers will be overwhelmed and will not be able to take calls to provide individual emergency information.

Create an Emergency Plan:

Have family communication and evacuation plans.

Identify multiple evacuation routes and meeting points outside the danger zone.

Prepare an Emergency Kit:

Include essentials such as water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.

Prepare a kit for your home and for your cars.

Maintain Defensible Space:

Clear brush, leaves, and other flammable materials around your property.

Ensure your home is accessible for emergency responders.

Help Your Community:

Check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance during an emergency.

Volunteer with local emergency preparedness organizations like the Atherton Disaster and Preparedness Team (ADAPT). https://www.getreadyatherton.org/

The Atherton Police Department is working closely with local fire authorities and emergency management teams to ensure our community is as prepared as possible. We also offer resources and training sessions on disaster readiness, please take advantage of these opportunities that are offered by our ADAPT program.

Together, we can minimize risks and ensure the safety of our families, homes, and community. Let us take the lessons from Los Angeles to heart and act now to prepare for whatever challenges the future may hold.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

Stay safe,

Steven D McCulley
