Discover the Passion and Genius of Auguste Rodin at Atherton’s First Speaker Series of 2026

Atherton residents are invited to kick off the new year with an inspiring cultural experience at the Atherton Library. Join the Friends of the Atherton Library on Thursday, January 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. for the first Speaker Series event of 2026, featuring the return of acclaimed art historian Jim Caldwell.

Caldwell, a longtime favorite among local audiences, will guide attendees through the extraordinary life and work of Auguste Rodin, one of the most influential sculptors in modern history. Known for his bold artistic vision and expressive style, Rodin transformed the world of sculpture at the turn of the 20th century. Despite humble beginnings and being largely self‑taught, he rose to international fame and is widely regarded as the father of modern sculpture.

Rodin’s preferred medium—clay later cast in bronze—allowed him to create works filled with movement, emotion, and raw human energy. His unconventional poses, vigorous modeling techniques, and complex compositions broke away from traditional forms and opened the door to a new era of artistic expression. Caldwell’s talk will explore not only Rodin’s groundbreaking techniques but also the passion that fueled his creativity, reflected in both his personal life and the dramatic intensity of his sculptures.

This event is free, open to the public, and no RSVP is required. Seating is first‑come, first‑served, so residents are encouraged to arrive early and bring a neighbor along for an afternoon of art, history, and community connection.
