Active Transportation Plan

Next Stop: TBPSC!

The results of the second phase of public outreach for the Active Transportation Plan, along with updated network recommendations and policy items for consideration, will be discussed at the Transportation, Bicycle ,and Pedestrian Safety Committee (TBPSC) meeting on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m. at Atherton Council Chambers (80 Fair Oaks Lane).

The TBPSC agenda will include the review and discussions of following documents:

The intent is to seek Committee and public feedback on the recommendations, including the maps included above.

Included within the network recommendations are consideration of both bike lane and pedestrian walkway improvements along Atheron Avenue. The intent is to provide an east/west cross-Town connection between El Camino Real and Alameda de las Pulgas. Though straight line east/west connectivity could be provided via both Stockbridge Avenue and Atherton Avenue, support seemed higher for Atherton Avenue. Widening the roadway to accommodate full scale improvements for bike lanes and ped pedestrian walkways could take up a substantial amount of right-of-way and Town staff are seeking feedback on options/alternatives:

  • Provide both on Atherton Avenue
  • Provide bike lanes on Atherton Avenue and walkway on Stockbridge Avenue
  • Provide a bike lane in one direction, with bike route and walkway in the other direction
  • Other options/ideas you may have

Plan Background

The Town of Atherton is developing an Active Transportation Plan (ATP). This Plan is an update to the 2014 Town of Atherton Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The ATP aims to build upon the work completed in the 2014 plan and continue working toward creating a safer and more sustainable transportation network.

The primary purposes of the Active Transportation Plan are to:

  • Provide a comprehensive plan for bicycle and pedestrian improvements throughout the Town
  • Improve bicycle and pedestrian safety
  • Provide connectivity with adjacent communities
  • Become more strategic and successful competing for bicycle/pedestrian grant funding
  • Identify barriers and solutions for residents to safely access bicycle and pedestrian destinations within the Town of Atherton and to other regional destinations
